But there’s a new group of ultrarich millionaires on the scene, some of whom made their fortunes almost overnight.

The world of cryptocurrency is new and volatile, with those who strike lucky potentially making themselves very wealthy in the process.

In such an unpredictable sector, it can be hard to get a true idea of what someone is worth, but we’ve collated some of the web’s best estimates to create the 2020 Crypto Rich List.

Satoshi Nakamoto

The true identity of Satoshi Nakamoto is shrouded in mystery, but they’re known as the person (or people) who first developed bitcoin. The latest estimates predict that Nakamoto is in possession of around 1 million bitcoin, which in today’s money, translates to about $34.9 billion, making them by far the richest person in crypto and one of the richest people in the world overall.

Micree Zhan

$3.2bn

The richest person in crypto that we can actually put a name and a face to is Micree Zhan (also known as Zhan Ketuan), who is the co-founder of Bitmain, which is the world's largest cryptocurrency mining company. After a long power struggle, he was ousted from the company in 2019, but he remains a billionaire, with an estimated net worth of $3.2 billion.

Chris Larsen

$2.7bn

Chris Larsen has co-founded several successful Silicon Valley startups, one of the most notable being Ripple, which allows for international payments using blockchain technology. Ripple is used by some of the world’s biggest banks such as American Express and Santander and has made its founder worth around $2.7 billion over the years.

Half of the world’s 25 richest people in crypto hail from the USA, with just over a quarter coming from the Far East.

Just three of the crypto rich list were from Europe, including Valery Vavilov (Latvia), Blythe Masters (UK) and Vitalik Buterin (Russia).

The average age of the people on the list was just 43 (millionaires in other sectors are often much older), with the oldest being Tim Draper, at 62, while Vitalik Buterin of Ethereum is worth around $360 million at just 26 years old.
