Trading Fees

There are different fee models that cryptocurrency exchanges follow to charge their clients, and Bitfinex follows the Maker/Taker fee model.

This is a simple structure where the exchange tends to offer a rebate to makers (liquidity providers) and levy fees to takers (liquidity consumers). Some of the notable areas where Bitfinex charges their clients for using the services they offer are during Order Execution (Spot, Derivatives, etc.), Margin Funding, Deposits and Withdrawals.

Maker Fee

This is where you make a limit order for others to match against - hence you are the "Maker".

While executing orders at Bitfinex, the maker fee is charged based on the total trading volume in the previous 30 days. It starts from 0.1% for the order volume anywhere between $1 and $500k. From there, the fee starts to reduce as the size of the order increases. If your order volume is above $7.5m in the last 30 days, there is no fee charged whatsoever. Below you can see the maker fees of Bitfinex for different trading volumes.

30 days TradingVolumeMaker Fees

$500,000 - $1,000,0000.08%

$5,000,000 - $7,500,0000.02%
$7,500,000 and moreNo Fee Charged

Taker Fee

This is where you make a market order and "take" a price offered by someone else.

The taker fee starts from 0.2% for low trading volumes and goes down to 0.055% as the volume executed in the last 30 days increases. Below you can see the taker fees of Bitfinex for different trading volumes.

The fee charged on trading Derivatives

The same maker/taker fee structure is followed while trading derivatives as well. But here, makers are paid rebates, and a certain amount of fee is charged to the takers for the reasons mentioned above. Similar to spot trading, the fee charged depends on the total volume of trades executed in the last 30 days.

Maker rebates start from 0.02%, and it will increase up to 0.03% as your total trading volume increases. Contrarily, for takers, 0.075% of fees are charged for lower trading volumes, and it will reduce to 0.0625% if there is a rise in your trading volume. Below you can find the details of maker rebates paid and taker fees charged on the Bitfinex platform.

Deposit Methods

We found the entire funding and withdrawal procedure of your Bitfinex accounts to be pretty seamless. You can only deposit fiat currencies in your account once you complete the full verification procedure. USD, EUR, GBP and JPY are some of the notable Fiat currencies that you can use for account funding. Bitfinex exchange also allows Tether (USDT) deposits with intermediate verification.

Cryptocurrency deposits can easily be made without going through any verification procedure. You can just transfer the fund from an external wallet to your Bitfinex wallet in a few simple steps. Once the funds get deposited in your spot wallet, you can manage using those funds within the exchange for a different form of trading like margin trading, OTC trading, etc.

Currently, bank deposits would take a maximum of 7 days for the funds to be reflected in your account while the crypto deposits reflect much faster. Bitfinex does not charge any fee for crypto funding while 0.1% of fee is charged for Fiat deposits.

Deposit fees

There is no fee charged for depositing cryptocurrencies or stablecoins on the Bitfinex exchange. However, if you are willing to make deposits using the bank wire transfer, 0.1% is charged with a minimum deposit of 60 USD or EUR.

Withdrawals

Withdrawals work more or less the same way as deposits. Clients can withdraw fiat currencies directly to their bank account through wire transfers. Cryptocurrencies can also be withdrawn to your respective wallets in a few simple steps. It takes up to 10 business days to complete the fiat withdrawal but only ten hours for the withdrawal of cryptocurrencies.

Withdrawal fees

Different withdrawal fees are charged for withdrawing different cryptocurrencies. For bank withdrawals, 0.1% of fee is charged with the amount that is being transferred, with the minimum withdrawal of 60 USD or Euros. However, if you are willing to make an express wire transfer where the funds take less than 24 hours to reach your account, 1% of fee is charged. There is also an option for high-frequency bank withdrawals with more than $1 million in a month, 3% of fee is charged.

To better understand the impact of this fee on your overall withdrawal amount, let’s consider the following examples:

Withdrawing Fiat

For Fiat withdrawals - If you are withdrawing a total sum of $5000 from your Bitfinex account, 0.1% of withdrawal fee is charged, and the total amount you will be receiving will be $5000 - $5 = $4995.

Withdrawing Crytpo

For Crypto withdrawals - If you make a withdrawal of 0.5 BTC from your Bitfinex account, 0.0004 of BTC is charged as withdrawal fee, and you will be receiving 0.4996 BTC to your corresponding wallet.

Verification

We found the entire process required to get your Bitfinex account verified to be a bit lengthy. However, it doesn’t take much time to complete the entire procedure once all of the required documents are ready. There are two levels of verifications which you can opt from - Full Verification and Intermediate Verification.

Your account need not be fully verified to get started with trading on Bitfinex. Full verification is only mandatory if you are wishing to deposit or withdraw fiat currencies like USD and EUR or some stable coins like USDK and OKB. Simply put, with intermediate verification, you can deposit, withdraw, and trade cryptocurrencies right after signing up on Bitfinex exchange.

To get your Bitfinex account completely verified, you must fill an online questionnaire and attach the documents mentioned below as supporting evidence. A KYC declaration form also needs to be downloaded, signed and uploaded on the platform to prove & confirm the accuracy of the information you have provided to Bitfinex.

Verification Requirements

RequirementsAction
Forms to fillKYC Declaration Form
AgeAt least 21 years old
Personal InformationMobile number, Residential address, Email address.
ID’s RequiredTwo valid ID's government-issued IDs are required. a) For the name/age proof b) For the proof of residence
Accepted ID’s ( name/age proof)Passport, Driving License, National ID card, Employment Permit Card, Residency card.
Accepted ID’s ( proof of residence)Any Utility bill that is issued by a government authority or a licensed corporation will be accepted. These details, such as name and residential address, must be clearly seen.
Other DocumentsBank statement of the most recent month with your name should be seen as the account holder

Verification Time

Comparatively, Bitfinex takes longer time to complete the client verification requests. It takes a minimum of 1 week to a maximum of 2 weeks to process the verification requests. The processing time can even take longer during specific times, like when the public interest in cryptos is higher, etc.

The Bitfinex verification team may even request any additional documents if required, and they will reach out to you only via mail. Hence it is important to frequently check your email inbox after you complete the verification procedure. You will even receive verification confirmation on the same mail ID.

Pros of completing full verification

  • Once your Bitfinex account is completely verified, you can make bank wire deposits and withdrawals of all the accepted Fiat currencies such as USD, EUR, GBP, JPY, and CNH etc.
  • You can also deposit and withdraw supported Stable and Utility tokens such as OKB, USDK, etc.
  • You get to access LEO, which is the native cryptocurrency of the Bitfinex exchange. Using this LEO token, you get to avail a lot of fee discounts while trading on this exchange.
  • As a verified user you are asked for fewer confirmations when depositing and withdrawing funds on the Bitfinex exchange.
  • If you are a verified user, you even get to request express withdrawals by contacting the Bitfinex support staff.

The verification mentioned above process is for verifying individual accounts, that is for retail traders. For corporate trading account verification, the process is more or less the same, but more company-related documents must be submitted.

Security

We have observed extensive security measures undertaken by Bitfinex while performing trading activities on the exchange. When compared to other major exchanges in the market, clearly Bitfinex takes the front seat in terms of security. We assume that this might be because of the bitter past experiences that this exchange has gone through (see below).

A lot of safety protections have been made mandatory for the users of Bitfinex. This might cause some inconvenience for a few clients, but we felt it is ok, considering the importance of security, especially in a crypto exchange that has undergone a couple of hacks before. For instance, as you can see below, you can't use any of the services offered by Bitfinex unless you enable 2-factor authentication.

Two-Factor Authentication

There are two different ways through which users can set up two-factor authentication to their Bitfinex accounts. One is the well-known Google Authenticator while the other is a bit more advanced authentication standard known as U2F.

U2F

Universal 2nd Factor is an advanced authentication technique used to provide additional security to the client accounts. Using this service, the two-factor authentication can be simplified as the software uses Bluetooth, Near Field Communication, or a USB security device like Ledger Nano S crypto hardware wallet.

This U2F security key can be used for additional verification during logins, changing password, making modifications in the accounts, and withdrawal confirmations, etc. The reliability of this service is more as it is developed by global companies like Google, NXP semiconductors etc.

Google Authentication

If you are not interested in using the above authentication service, you can use Google Authenticator for your 2FA. As we all know, it is an external app offered by Google. Once the user links it to their Bitfinex account, a six to the eight-digit password can be seen on the app which gets refreshed in every few seconds. This can be provided as additional security to confirm all the activities you perform on the Bitfinex exchange.

Storage of client funds

The exchange claims that more than 99% of its client funds are stored in cold storage. The signatures of the Bitfinex exchange’s multi-signature system are distributed geographically for additional security.

Other security measures

There are many other practices Bitfinex follows to enhance their client accounts. Some of them include IP address change detection, saving of login data to track uncommon or suspicious activity, allowing users to freeze their accounts with one click in case of unusual activity, limiting withdrawals to a specific IP address, usage of advanced mail encryption techniques for seamless withdrawal confirmations, etc.

Apart from these, Bitfinex provides protection against DDoS (distributed denial of service) attacks. Taking regular backups and database encryption are additional quality security practices this exchange follows. Clients of Bitfinex also get to whitelist IP’s and withdrawal addresses to avoid malicious activities on their accounts from a different location.

Secured withdrawals

Bitfinex has made the entire withdrawal process extremely secure for their clients. Let's consider you are making a withdrawal of $10k from your account.

  1. You need to first confirm your exchange account password before starting the withdrawal procedure.
  2. After that, you are asked to provide two-factor authentication for whichever service you have opted for (U2F or Google Authenticator).
  3. Once the authentication is successfully completed, you might have to confirm the withdrawal by clicking a link that is sent to your registered mail ID.
Only once all of these steps are followed, the amount gets disbursed. You also get to whitelist specific withdrawal addresses for extra security. Bitfinex also uses PGP email encryption technique to confirm the withdrawal process that is immune to any of the malware.

Security history

Bitfinex has gone through a lot of hardships in the recent past in terms of security with two major hacks. The first hack took place in 2015, where the client lost about $400k worth of cryptos. But the second one in 2016 was the second biggest ever hack in the history of crypto exchanges, which resulted in the loss of $73 Million client funds. The consequences of the hack were so bad that the price of Bitcoin fell by 20%, leaving a strong impact on the crypto market.

However, this exchange made sure to cover most of the funds lost by their clients because of this hack. Currently, even though all the client funds are not insured, the exchange made it a priority to cover the funds if they get lost because of any security breaches like hacks, etc.

User Interface

The user interface and the entire experience of the Bitfinex platform seemed great to us. Despite being an exchange that is heavily used by experienced traders, the care they have taken to make the terminal user-friendly is commendable.

The user dashboard is comprehensive with all the important options on the left panel.

Trading

Below is how the trading terminal of the Bitfinex platform looks like.

The most information related to a particular cryptocurrency pair can clearly be seen at a glance as soon as we select the pair. The entire trading terminal is heavily customizable too; you can reorder all of the options you see in the above snapshots in the way you intend to.

All the premium indicators in the market can be accessed with a single click right from the trading terminal. This adds a great value for traders who rely on technical analysis and especially for indicator-based traders.

Placing trades and exiting the markets is also pretty straightforward similar to many exchanges

After placing the orders, you can easily track your trades under the ticker box in the left side panel. Your completed trades can also easily be seen at the bottom of the terminal.

Depositing

Below you can see the deposit page. We can see how organized it looks with each of the available deposit options clearly mentioned. Also, the FAQs related to deposits have been smartly placed for quick access.

Customer Support

We found the customer support of Bitfinex exchange to be satisfactory. Their support team works around the clock, and it is commendable that they operate during weekends also. However, the only support that is available for clients is via email. Typically, the response time is less than 12 hours, and there were times where the reply time crossed the given threshold.

The most impressive part about Bitfinex exchange's support is their well-curated knowledge base. Here, we can find answers to most of the frequently asked questions related to Account, Trading, Technical issues, etc. Answers to almost all the problems can be found here, and the navigation has made pretty seamless with the integration of search bar.

Users can raise tickets right on the support page of Bitfinex explaining the queries in detail. It is important to select the right category to raise questions for quicker solutions.

Reviews

With 3.2 Trustpilot score, we can consider that the overall client sentiment on this exchange is average. As you can see in the above snapshot, 44% of all the reviews are marked as excellent, which is good. The best things mentioned about Bitfinex related to the availability of wide-range of assets, account security, and the low trading fee charged.

Most of the negative reviews are related to the "hidden fee" charged by the exchange during withdrawals. Regarding customer support, there are mixed reviews where some say they got prompt responses while others had a contrary opinion.

Other Features

Apart from trading cryptos, there are many other features that make the Bitfinex exchange appealing and interesting.

Margin trading

Bitfinex has enabled the margin trading feature to their clients. Clients can now trade with leverage up to 5x from the funds received from the peer to peer margin funding platform.

Users can either place an order to borrow funds from the exchange at their desired rate and duration or simply open a new position and let Bitfinex automatically find the best funding rate available at that time.

Margin funding

You can Borrow or Lend.

For Borrowers

Bitfinex margin funding rates are calculated based on the amount borrowed/lent, rate of interest, and the total number of seconds the funds were borrowed or lent.

A simple formula to calculate interest charged on margin funding is as follows.

Total amount borrowed x (Interest Rate/100) x (total seconds/86400) |

So for instance, if you have borrowed $10,000 with 0.06% interest rate and use that to margin trade for an hour, the total amount of fee you need to pay at the end of the hour will be equal to ($10K x 0.6% x 3600/86400) = $0.25

It is crucial to know that if you have borrowed funds and return them without using it in an hour, you are entitled to pay the interest for the entire hour.

For Lenders

Users who are interested in lending funds on the Bitfinex exchange will earn interest, but a fee of 15% is charged on the interest earned. This can be calculated by using the below simple formula.

Total amount lent x (Interest Rate/100) x total seconds/86400) x 0.85 |

*** We have multiplied by 0.85 because a 15% fee is charged on the total interest earned.

Let’s say you have lent $10,000 at 0.06% interest rate. You would earn $6.00 per day. On that $ 6.00 a 15 % fee is charged by Bitfinex. So the net interest that you will receive is $5.10/day.

Derivatives

Risk mitigation is an essential part of trading. Since the cryptocurrency market is highly volatile, it is often associated with a higher risk than other markets. Thus, users wanting to trade in the crypto market by reducing risk can trade the Derivative Products on Bitfinex exchange. Here, traders can indulge in the futures and perpetual futures contracts. And as per sources, more new Derivative products are expected to launch in this exchange soon.

Advanced order types

Apart from the regular order like Limit and Stop, Bitfinex has an advanced order type called Scaled orders. Scaled order is a tool that enables users to automatically place multiple limit orders at a specified price range. This type of order eliminates confusion and inefficiency, as traders need not repeatedly place limit orders manually.

API

The two APIs of Bitfinex – REST and Websocket are programmed in a way that all the features available on the Bitfinex platform can be accessed by completely integrating the product and platforms of the user’s choice.

Staking

With the soft-staking program by Bitfinex, users can earn rewards for simply holding digital assets in their account. To earn through staking, all the user needs to do is pick a digital token to stake, and deposit that token into their account.

The available tokens to stake are:

  • Tron (TRX)
  • EOS (EOS)
  • Tezos (XTZ)
  • COSMOS (ATOM)
  • Algorand (ALGO)
  • V.Systems (VSYS)

Within both the IOS and Android Apps users can perform:

  • Exchange and Margin Trading
  • View Status of open orders
  • Chart Analysis
  • Transfer between wallets

Notification on trade execution

For every trade that is executed, the client is notified by a popup window. Be it opening, closing, or modifying, the trader gets a notification on the action performed. This is an excellent feature to verify the action made by the client. The notifications are simple and precise that show on-point information.

Price Alerts

Price Alerts is indeed the best feature on the Bitfinex mobile platform. Traders, especially day traders, can place price alerts that will notify them that the price has reached the specified level.

User Rating and Reviews Summarized

The Bitfinex Android app is rated with 3.4 stars out of 5 stars. The app does a great job on the features front. Most users are extremely satisfied with the security offered through API keys. Many are also impressed by the support team for solving the issues promptly.

On the other hand, there are several complaints about the smoothness of the app. The content in the app is not as detailed as the web platform and lacks an aesthetic look. Users also say that the app lags and hangs frequently, and takes more than a few minutes to open the app.

Bitfinex IOS App

The working of the Bitfinex IOS app is similar to that of its Android version and currently has a store rating of 4.1.

Conclusion

Bitfinex offers everything a professional crypto trader and investor would need. It is one of those exchanges that offers the largest trading volumes while providing quality services with low fees charged. So, if you are an absolute novice crypto trader/investor, it would be a bit hard for you to get used to the exchange.

Some of the major pros of this exchange are the variety of crypto-asset classes they offer, plenty of deposit and withdrawal methods, comprehensive trading platform, and the prompt support. Some of the significant cons would be the lack of transparency during withdrawals. Also, customers from the US are not accepted.
