Trading Fees

For crypto to crypto trades, Changelly offers both traditional floating rates and fixed rates. The fee you get charged for this service depends on which rate you choose.

There are also fees for fiat to crypto and crypto to fiat conversions.

Floating rate fee

By default, cryptocurrency swaps at Changelly are done at a “floating rate.” This means that the price is locked in at the moment Changelly receives your funds, not when you see the quote on the page.

Since a blockchain network may take between 15 seconds and 10 minutes to confirm your transaction, this means the amount of coins you receive could be different from what you see on the order confirmation window.

If you choose this default method, Changelly will charge you a 0.25% fee.

This fee will come out of the purchasing currency, not the purchased currency. So if you exchange 1000 BAT for ETH, for example, 2.5 BAT will be deducted from the payment before the purchase is made.

Fixed rate fee

If you want to lock in a price before sending payment, you can choose to receive a fixed rate quote. This locks in the price at the moment of the quote instead of at the moment the payment is confirmed.

For fixed rate transactions, Changelly states that it includes “a small reserve amount to ensure the safety of user’s funds” in the quoted price.

Changelly has not disclosed the amount of this reserve fee. In our testing, we found that fixed rates were approximately 2.9% higher than floating rates. But part of this percentage may have been due to market fluctuations at the time of testing.

Fiat to crypto transactions

Changelly handles fiat to crypto transactions through third party providers. These providers vary in terms of the fees they charge. Moonpay charges 7.5%, Indacoin 10%, and Simplex has not disclosed the fee that it charges.

The provider that is available to you depends on what country you reside in. We’ll discuss this more in the “countries Changelly is available in” section, below.

Crypto to fiat transactions

To convert crypto to fiat, Changelly charges a flat 5%. Fixed conversion rates are not available for crypto to fiat transactions. The price is locked in after 1 payment confirmation on the blockchain.

Permitted Countries

Changelly is available in most countries. But some countries may not have fiat-to-crypto or crypto-to-fiat options. In addition, there are a few countries that Changelly lists as completely unsupported.

Key countries served include:

United Kingdom
Australia
New Zealand
Canada
Ireland
India
South Africa
France
Germany
Italy
Sweden
Denmark
Switzerland
Netherlands
Austria
Spain
Belgium
Hong Kong
Singapore
China
South Korea
Pakistan
+ 158 more

Changelly unsupported countries

Changelly maintains a list of unsupported countries. If you live in one of these countries, Changelly is officially unavailable to you.

Basic coin swaps at Changelly do not always require KYC/AML. So even if you live in one of these countries, you may still be able to use the service to make small, infrequent exchanges between coins.

However, the exchange software uses a scoring system to flag suspicious swaps that could be getting used for money laundering. If your swap gets recognized as suspicious by the system, Changelly may require you to undergo identity verification before sending you your crypto.

The most prominent country on this list is the United States. If you live in the US, we suggest Coinmama or Kraken as possible alternatives to Changelly.

Countries where fiat to crypto is available

Changelly processes fiat to crypto transactions through partners, and these partners vary in terms of the countries they support.

However, there is general support for Canada, Australia, the UK, EU, and CIS regions.

For full details on fiat to crypto availability, select Moonpay limitations and fee, Indacoin limitations and fee, or Simplex limitations and fee from the Changelly FAQ page

Countries where crypto to fiat is available

Changelly offers crypto to fiat conversion in a variety of countries, including the UK and most of the EU. This service is not available in Australia or Canada.

Deposit Methods

Changelly is a non-custodial service. It doesn’t hold deposits for customers. So in this section, we’ll discuss available methods for making cryptocurrency purchases directly with fiat.

Changelly accepts debit and credit cards for fiat to crypto conversion. Payments are handled through Moonpay, Indacoin, or Simplex. EUR, GBP, and USD are the accepted currencies for these transactions.

SWIFT, SEPA, Skrill, and Faster Payments transfers are not accepted.

So for smaller convenient transactions where you arent concerned about the higher fees of using cards then this can be a good option, but for larger amounts, exchanges that allow bank transfers at lower fees will make more sense

Withdrawals

As with deposit methods, there really are no “withdrawal methods” for Changelly - since the service does not hold user’s coins.

This section will go over methods for selling crypto and receiving cash.

Users can sell BTC to Changelly in exchange for EUR. SEPA is the only method available for receiving these cash payments.

Paypal, SWIFT, and Skrill are not available as withdrawal methods.

As with fiat purchases, Changelly has limited options when it comes to receiving money from sales of crypto. Bitcoin is the only cryptocurrency that can be sold for cash. And SEPA is the only option to use to receive cash.

Verification

Changelly does not require identity verification for routine crypto swaps. However, some transactions may get flagged as “suspicious” if the user is not verified.

For this reason, many users may want to get verified even though it is not required.

For users that want to do more than €10,000 per day in transactions or more than €50,000 of transactions in a lifetime, identity verification is required.

There are two levels of verification at Changelly: basic and advanced.

Basic

Basic verification allows you to make up to €10,000 worth of transactions per day, as long as your total lifetime transactions do not exceed €50,000.

To get basic verified you’ll need to submit a photo of your passport.

You’ll also need to provide proof of the origin of funds such as a tax return or bank statement to reach this level of verification.

Advanced

If you want to exceed the limits for basic verification, you’ll need to pass advanced verification. This requires you to provide a second ID and go through a face recognition call with a staff member.

Advanced verified users can do an unlimited volume of transactions at Changelly.

Security

Security is always a concern when using a cryptocurrency exchange service. So you may want to know what Changelly does to protect your coins from being stolen by hackers.

No crypto custody

We’ve mentioned this several times already. But since we are talking about security, it bears repeating: Changelly does not hold user assets in an account.

This is the most important security feature of the service. It means that user’s funds are only at risk for the time that it takes Changelly’s servers to recognize a payment has been received and send out the user’s coins in response. This generally takes no more than a few seconds.

2 Factor Authentication (2FA)

Changelly also provides 2 Factor Authentication (2FA) for customers that prefer to use it. This function is useful if you are concerned about hackers getting access to your transaction history.

2FA can be turned on from within the settings menu. You’ll need to download Google Authenticator to your phone in order to use it.

Once 2FA is set up, hackers shouldn’t be able to access your Changelly account and view your transaction history unless they have access to both your email and phone.

If you turn on 2FA but lose your phone, you can turn it back off by contacting support and providing the code you originally used to set up 2FA.

Changelly hack?

We have searched for information about a Changelly hack. But we have found no evidence that a hacker has ever managed to breach Changelly’s defences.

By the nature of its service Changelly very low risk and hence secure. It is a noncustodial exchange that dopes not appear to have been hacked.

User Interface

For making crypto to crypto trades, Changelly has an unparalleled user interface. It's hard to imagine how coin swaps could be made easier than they are at Changelly.

For fiat to crypto and crypto to fiat transactions, the interface is a bit more tedious to use than those of competitors. But most users will still be able to perform these transactions without getting stuck.

Registering and making the first swap

When a user first navigates to Changelly.com, he is immediately shown an interface to be used for crypto swaps.

If the user enters crypto amounts into this field and clicks exchange now, he is taken to a second page where he can choose a floating or fixed rate and enter a wallet address.

Clicking next step after filling out these fields takes the user to a third page, called the “checkout” page.

On the checkout page, the button for sign up & make payment is greyed out. The only way to make this button clickable is to enter an email address so that an account can be registered.

Once the email address is entered and the button is clicked, the checkout page refreshes. The refreshed page shows a button that says confirm and make payment. When the user presses this button, he receives an address where payment can be sent.

A message displays saying that the user has 36 hours (or 15 minutes for a fixed rate) to send payment. If payment is not sent within this time, the transaction is automatically cancelled.

Changelly does not require the user to verify his email before making a swap, and the registration process is integrated into the first swap transaction in a way that is seamless overall.

Logging in after the first swap

If the user clears his browser’s cache or manually logs out of the site, he’ll need to be able to log back in. Within a few minutes after registering, Changelly sends the user an email with their login credentials, including a randomly generated default password.

Once the user has this email, he can log in by clicking sign in in the upper-right corner of the homepage.

Making a new swap

Once the user is registered, he can make new swaps the same way he made the first one. The only difference is that he doesn’t need to enter his email address during new transactions.

Buying crypto with fiat

To buy crypto with fiat, the user selects the buy tab in the center of the screen. He then enters the amount of crypto he wants to buy and selects his country from a drop-down menu.

This produces a list of partner deals. Each deal shows the conversion rate and payment methods available. Clicking buy now on any deal produces a field where the user can enter his cryptocurrency address.

After entering an address, the user clicks go to payment to be redirected to the partner website, where the transaction can be completed.

Selling crypto for fiat

To sell crypto, the user first clicks the sell tab in the center of the screen. This produces a statement that a partner service called Mercuryo will be handling the transaction. The user then clicks the green sell crypto button to continue.

On the next page, the user enters a BTC amount he wants to sell or fiat amount he wants to receive, fills in his phone number in the fields provided, agrees with the terms of service, and clicks sell BTC.

The next step is to enter a 2FA number that he receives through SMS. Once this done, the user is sent through three additional screens where he is asked to provide his email address, photos of his ID, and his bank account information to receive the cash.

Once all of these screens have been passed through, a Bitcoin address is displayed for the user to send his funds to be sold.

Customer Support

Changelly offers customer support by email and chat. You can submit a ticket by scrolling down to the bottom and clicking helpdesk → submit a ticket on any page. Or you can reach staff through chat by clicking the flashing chat with us button at the bottom-right.

We tested out the chat function to make sure there was a live person answering. We got an answer within less than a minute from someone who was clearly not a computer program.

Trustpilot reviews

Changelly has a 4.6 out of 5 stars customer service rating on TrustPilot.

Positive reviews emphasize the 24 hour chat support and helpful staff. Negative reviews emphasize that Changelly requires KYC/AML for some purchases and that users may get their crypto stuck in the account if they do not get their identity verified.

Some negative reviews also complain about receiving a different crypto amount than what they expected when choosing a floating rate.

Changelly responds to nearly every review posted on Trustpilot, whether negative or positive.

Here is an excerpt from a positive review we found:

“...I was just helped the other day with an XLM exchange that I had messed up. They guided me through all the steps, I was able to recover my XLM, and exchange it for Cardano, which if you're reading this, is so undervalued-a steal right now. Anyway, I just can't say enough great things about Changelly, love them!!!”

And here is an excerpt from a negative review:

“They require KYC and will ask for it after you send your funds, so in essence they keep your $ until you give up your entire identity to a foreign website with no assurances that your information is safe. I would not recommend Changelly to anyone...”

Other Features

Here are a few notable features of Changelly that we couldn’t cover in other sections.

Automatic best price

When a user buys crypto from Changelly, the coins don’t come directly from Changelly. Instead, the service does an API call to multiple exchanges, including Bittrex, Poloniex, Binance, and others.

The Changelly software gets a quote from all of these exchanges, then passes down the best price to the user. This may result in lower prices when compared to using an exchange directly.

Changelly Pro

Despite the benefits of Changelly swap service, some users may need to make quick trades that can only be performed off-chain. For example, day traders and scalpers often need to make trades at a faster rate than can currently be done on a blockchain.

For these users, Changelly offers a fully featured exchange called Changelly Pro. Changelly Pro custodies crypto just like other exchanges, allowing users to execute a trade within a second or less.

Mobile App

The Changelly mobile app has an intuitive interface that makes it easy to use. Nearly all of the functions that can be done on the website can be done with the app almost as easily.

The one exception to this is sales of crypto for fiat. We hope this function will be implemented in a future mobile app build.

Logging in (or not)

As soon as the app loads, a button is displayed that allows the user to log in. Alternatively, the user can click skip to continue using the app without logging in.

If the user chooses to skip, he is simply prompted again for his login credentials right before he confirms a swap.

A user can also log in by clicking the person icon in the upper-right corner of the home tab.

Keeping up with the market

If you want to know the market price of a particular coin, you can click the rates tab at the bottom-right to get a list of coins and their current prices.

Clicking on a particular coin provides a detailed price chart, with buy/sell buttons below it.

Buying crypto with fiat or another crypto

To make a trade, the user selects the exchange tab from the list at the bottom. Both fiat to crypto and crypto to crypto swaps can be done from this screen.

The user enters the amount of coins he wants and clicks next step to continue. An address field then displays for him to enter his crypto address. A QR reader can be activated by clicking an icon at the right of this field.

If the user is buying crypto with fiat, the next screen will ask for debit card information.

If the user is swapping one crypto for another, the next screen will produce an address where the payment coin can be sent. A button near the bottom of the screen can be used to produce a QR code for this address.

Selling crypto for fiat

The Changelly mobile app does not allow users to sell crypto for fiat. This can only be done from a desktop.

Changelly mobile app reviews

Changelly mobile has a 4.2 rating on Google Play and a 4.9 rating on the Apple App Store. Positive reviews praise the speed of the app and its smooth functioning, negative reviews complain about specific bugs such as black screens and “buy” buttons that don’t work.

Our Rating: 7/10
Open A Changelly Account >>

Conclusion

Changelly is a great service for users who want to swap one crypto for another quickly and easily. There are no complicated charts to deal with, no need to set limits or stops, and no deposit or withdrawal processes.

If you want to trade one crypto for another at Changelly, you just fill out a few fields of information and click confirm and make payment. Your coins arrive within minutes.

On the other hand, Changelly does not provide many options for users that want to convert crypto into fiat or fiat into crypto. So if you are looking for a place to buy and sell crypto for cash, you may want to try Binance, or another exchange that has better options for these types of transactions.
